THIRTY-FIVE

MOLLY

The water thundered over Molly’s head, running down her shoulders, washing away her shame. She had been annoyed when Rachel started lecturing her, mainly because she knew her sister was right. Ben had been an asshole to her in the past. But she still turned to him because it was painful to go through life alone.

What Rachel wouldn’t consider was that people did change. Ben had been kinder today, more attentive. He had even agreed to join her at the Chester House function on Tuesday. That proved he still cared for her. Ben had failed to be there for her in the wake of her parents’ deaths, but maybe he realized that and was trying to be better. Molly tried to see the good in him, just as she tried to remember the good in her father.

As she was exiting the shower, her phone began to ring. She wrapped a towel around herself, spying Cara’s name on the screen. She silenced the call, walking into her bedroom. The phone rang again, and Molly decided she didn’t want to play this game all night. Rachel had already tracked her down; she might as well hear what Cara had to say in order to avoid a face-to-face confrontation.

She answered. “I’m not in the mood—”

“Molly, listen,” Cara cut her off. “I’m at the police station with Rachel. Her roommate, Cindy, died. The police think she was murdered by Gemini.”

“What?” Molly sat on the bed, the damp towel falling around her feet. “I saw Rachel tonight. She was just here.”

“She found her when she got home.” There was a pause, rustled background noise filling the silence. “She’s talking to the police right now. I think she’s pretty shaken up.”

Molly had wanted to avoid her sisters, refuse to engage until they agreed to hear her out. But in that moment, all the resentment she had toward her family and the rest of the world fell away.

“I’m on my way.”

As she got dressed, she thought about the strange closeness she felt to the situation. She’d just seen Rachel, and Rachel had just seen a dead body. Molly didn’t know Rachel’s roommate—Cindy, Cara had called her—but she’d just seen her a few days ago. Cindy had let them into the apartment the morning of their fight. Only yesterday she was alive, and now she was gone.

Then Molly thought about what Rachel had said, Cara’s theory that this killer was targeting them. She didn’t want it to be true. She wanted to believe the original Gemini killer had started up again. She didn’t want to think a copycat had picked up where her father left off. Of course, if her idea about the letter was true, that her father had uncovered the identity of the true Gemini killer, maybe that was why they’d been targeted.

Perhaps this person had sat around for a year, waiting, expecting the Martin girls to come forward. To announce Henry Martin as the Gemini killer. When that didn’t happen, maybe he decided to lash out, killing in quick succession, ensuring all the victims had a connection to them.
